University of Utah transforms architecture and planning building

Published: 31-Mar-2010

University of Utah is undertaking a net-zero renovation of College of Architecture and Planning’s building, with an intention to make it extremely energy efficient.

The 40 year-old building with single-pane windows and concrete walls will be transformed as a model of sustainability through the net-zero renovation process. The structure will become a zero carbon emissions structure.

The college is planning to cut the building's energy use by 80%. Water conservation and recycling systems will be installed. Monitors and dashboards that give feedback to students on their energy consumption will also be set up in the renovated facility.

The building will also receive its own energy source before being taken off the grid. The college's architecture students will create the facility as an instance of the largest net-zero energy renovation in the US.

On November 6, 2009 the college hosted a Net Zero Energy (NZE) Workshop that explored potential design and management solutions needed to transform its building into a NZE demonstration facility.
