University of California's South Hall achieves LEED Gold
Published: 05-May-2011
The University of California in Berkeley has secured LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council for the newly constructed South Hall building on campus.
The four-storey residence hall, spanning 67,000 square feet, features solar panels on the roof to heat water along with touch screen facilities in the hallways for controlling energy consumption. It comprises double-paned aluminum windows which are more efficient and entail lower maintenance costs.
The building also incorporates energy-saving appliances in kitchens on every floor, high-efficiency laundry room washers in addition to adjustable thermostats in every room. Other sustainable features include recycling centres for students on each floor with dual-flush toilets and low-flow showerheads that help in conservation of fresh water and a reduction in the amount of water being sent to the treatment plant.
The hall has been designed to allow maximum passage of natural light. Construction materials used in the building including brick, limestone, roof slate, hollow core floor slabs, and structural and reinforcing steel, have all been procured from local sources.
The building with an accommodation capacity of 201 students has completed construction in August 2010.
