Joseph Cole Recreation Center to undergo renovation
Published: 09-Feb-2010
Joseph Cole Recreation Center in the US will undergo renovations after the ground breaking ceremony by Adrian M. Fenty, mayor of Washington DC; Allen Y. Lew, executive director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization; and Jesús Aguirre, interim director of the Department of Parks & Recreation.
The project includes a new, co-located recreation center for the students at Wheatley Education Complex. The 7,600 square-feet facility will have expandable multi-purpose spaces, classrooms and office space, locker rooms with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant restrooms, regulation-size outdoor basketball court and indoor basketball court with new high-performance floor for safety. It is expected to be completed in June 2010.
Once the new facility opens its doors, the existing, antiquated recreation center, which was built in 1971, will be demolished. The school underwent a full modernization and multi-purpose wing addition, which reopened in August 2009. During the new recreation center’s construction, a temporary wall will be built to shield the school from any noise obstructions.
