Huddersfield University’s creative arts center awarded for technical excellence
Published: 03-Nov-2009
The creative arts center of the University of Huddersfield has won a Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) Award for Technical Excellence.
Designed by Darton Elgee Architects, the GBP15 million ($24.6 million) building for music and creative arts courses in the University campus was designed to ensure maximum sustainability - using a mixture of natural materials to create a warm but sharp image with a low carbon footprint.
Besides the new rehearsal space and a recital hall, the structure also includes work-space and exhibition areas for art and design students. An innovative feature is the distinctive, ‘cube-shaped’ electro-acoustic research studio, comprising cutting-edge technology to create a world-class research facility.
Barry le Beuvant, president elect of CIAT, explained that the design achieved its aim due to the use of materials both internally and externally that provides an impressive and vibrant building. He presented the University with a plaque, as well as a check and a certificate.
The building became fully operational late last year and was officially opened earlier this year by the Duke of Kent. The foundation stone was unveiled in the previous year by Her Majesty the Queen. The creative arts center is home to students studying music and music technology, fashion, creative imaging, multimedia, and business design awareness.
