HKS designs first LEED-Gold certified collegiate football facility in Texas

Published: 10-Mar-2010

The new 30,000 capacity stadium for the University of North Texas (UNT), designed by Texas-based global architectural design practice HKS, is expected to be the first LEED-Gold certified collegiate football facility.

Set to open in time for the 2011 football season, the new $1 billion stadium is a part of the college’s ‘We Mean Green’ initiative. The new facility under construction will replace the 57-year-old Fouts Field and is designed to become the first Gold LEED certified collegiate football facility.

The stadium will feature generous parking and tailgate space; ample ticket windows; first-class concession areas; close-to-the-action seating; state-of-the-art video and sound systems throughout the concourses and in the bowl; a Touchdown Terrace in the south end zone for group events; a full-service club level with indoor and outdoor seating; and luxurious private suites.

The stadium is designed to hold around 30,000 fans, and will also serve as an entertainment venue for the North Texas area, hosting outdoor concerts, community events, high school games, and band competitions.

The stadium is designed to comply with the traditional college stadium architecture, sporting a brick exterior envelope. The stadium’s park-like environment will feature paved walkways and bike paths, which will connect back to the main campus.

The first LEED certified college football stadium was University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium, which opened in September 2009.
