C.T. Hsu + Associates receives design award for Edgewater High School
Published: 29-Jan-2013
C.T. Hsu + Associates have received the First Place Award for the design of Edgewater High School from the Florida Educational Facilities Planners’ Association (FEFPA) presented at the 2013 Architectural Showcase Awards program in Jacksonville.
Edgewater High School is one of Orlando’s oldest and most visible high school campuses. C.T. Hsu + Associates master planned and designed a new 408,100 square foot expansion and renovation project to replace the aging campus, using a new urban design that reinterprets the large courtyards prevalent among Florida schools today.
The newly renovated 48-acre campus includes new classroom buildings, all new core facilities including the gym, auditorium, music suite, and the school’s multi-storey student commons, and renovated the remaining campus buildings to use as a ninth grade academy. The school’s open space was broken and transformed vertically to form an internalised academic spine. At the centre of the spine, a three-storey day-lit atrium has been featured. All three-storey classroom wings have been organised along the axis, with a gymnasium at one end and an administrative suite at the other.
The school fronts the neighborhood’s main street with a new performing arts centre and landscaped entry plaza.
The school also previously received the Award of Excellence design award in 2012 from the Orlando Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Orlando).
