Construction of environmental education facility progresses at Canada’s Trent University
Published: 29-May-2009
Construction of the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre at Trent University campus in Canada is progressing as scheduled.
Camp Kawartha Environment Centre is an environmental education and teacher training facility, the construction of which began in April 2009. The building is intended to be the most sustainable building in Canada.
Using innovative green architecture, the design will incorporate: reclaimed and recyclable building materials, an earth-bag foundation, straw bale walls, solar power, a rainwater collection system, and composting toilets.
Straw-bale wall panels have already been installed at the center. Students fashioned the straw bale units, weighing about 1,200 kg each.
The straw bale units are constructed horizontally and held together by wood until installation. With the aid of new installation method used, the installation process took just 20 to 30 minutes per unit along with being cost effective.
The facility will be equipped with solar energy system which will help the center to meet all its energy requirements.
The project funded by a $100,000 gift from the Gainey Foundation is expected to be completed by August 2009.
